If I were to ask you what is the most dangerous thing in society that is affecting teenagers today, what would you say? I’m sure a lot of people would immediately say drugs, or alcohol. Some would say it is sexual temptation, or simply negative peer pressure. Definitely these and other worldly influences are affecting not only teens, but adults as well. To say our society for the most part is anti God would be an understatement. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:2 that Satan is the “prince of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.” I Peter 5:8 says “The devil is seeking whom he may devour.” We have seen the effect of these powerful temptations in the lives of too many young people.
There is one not mentioned above, that I would like to talk about in this
article. It is one that is more subtle, but still very powerful and destructive.
It is “relativis
m”,
or “postmodernism”. Moral
relativism maintains that there is no objective standard of right and wrong
independent of humanity. The creation of moral principles stems only from within
a person, not as a distinct, detached reality. Each person is the source and
definer of his or her own ethical code, and each has equal power and authority
to define morality the way he or she sees fit.
Postmodernism is very similar in that it “rejects any overarching
explanation of what constitutes truth and reality.
Truth – is created by a specific culture or community and is “true” only
in and for that culture. Individual
persons are the product of their cultures.
That is we are not essentially unique individuals created in the image of
God; our identities are defined by our culture. Anything we regard as truth is
simply an arbitrary belief we have been conditioned to accept by our society,
just as others have been conditioned to accept a completely different set of
beliefs. Postmodernism also says
any system or statement that claims to be objectively true or unfavorably judges
the values, beliefs, lifestyle, and truth claims of another culture is a power
play, an effort by one culture to dominate other cultures.” (Josh McDowell:
Beyond Belief To Convictions).

We see this mindset way too often dealing with teenagers.
And I’m just not talking about those outside the church.
We often see it more from teenagers in the church.
Earlier in the article we mentioned how
Satan is called “the prince of the power of the air.”
That is one of the names he is given in the Bible.
He is also referred to as a roaring lion, serpent, thief, murderer,
deceiver, and liar just to name a few.
But he is also called “an angel of light.”
Paul said in Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive
through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and
the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”
It is sad when see young people who are “taken captive” by the philosophy
of postmodernism. There are those
who were once salt and light and now they have become just like everyone else
and are no longer making a difference for God.
Josh McDowell says “While we need to fear what our young people could be
tempted to do, we need to be more concerned with what our young people are led
to believe.” Please pray for us
that “we may share the gospel clearly as we should” (Col. 4:4).
It is our desire to lead people to Christ by boldly, and unashamedly
sharing the truth of God’s word with “gentleness and respect” (I Peter 3:15).
